Patton K. Jones, vice chairman, ARA, A Newmark Company Central Texas office. Mr. Jones is responsible for the Austin and San Antonio conventional multifamily business, the ARA Newmark National Student Housing Group, and the ARA Newmark National Manufactured Housing Group. Mr. Jones oversees business development, market research, and all aspects of property disposition. The collective business lines produce roughly $1B in sales annually. Prior to joining ARA Newmark, Mr. Jones was co-founder of an aviation parts company. He lived and worked in London and Hong Kong and was responsible for sales in 33 countries. The company grew 9,200% in 3 years and was winner of numerous business awards - ranked # 1 in "Houston's 100 Fastest-Growing Businesses" in 1999 by the Houston Chronicle, ranked # 7 in Dun & Bradstreet and Entrepreneur Magazine's "Hot 100, America's Fastest-Growing New Businesses 1999," and scored one of the Aviation Industries' best web sites rated by Forbes Magazine in 2000. Additionally, Mr. Jones's past work experience includes single-family patio home development, energy trading, and serving as an international sales manager for a Fortune 500 tech firm. Ryan Lang, executive managing director at ARA, A Newmark Company and head of its Student Housing Group, is responsible for leading the platform and spearheading best-in-class investment sale services for its clients. He has represented many of the largest institutional, public and private real estate companies in the country and has closed approximately $5.1 billion in real estate transactions.

Prior to joining ARA Newmark, Mr. Lang was vice president and co-leader of CBRE’s National Student Housing Group. In 2010, he joined New Orleans-based Stirling Properties as director of multifamily investments. While at Stirling, Mr. Lang specialized in the sale of conventional and student housing assets and was one of the most active multihousing experts in the state. He was recognized as the top investment sales broker at Stirling Properties for 2011 and 2012. Mr. Lang began his real estate career in New York City at Marcus & Millichap where he gained experience in seller representation, acquisitions and investment underwriting. During his first year there, his investment team was recognized as the #1 top earning team in the of office and he was awarded the Pace Setter award for 2008.

Mr. Lang was named to the ARA Newmark/NKF Chairman’s Circle in recognition of being one of the top producing brokers in the entire company and he regularly speaks at acclaimed student housing events throughout the United States and Europe. Mr. Lang has been featured in the Wall Street Journal and on National Public Radio for his expertise and leadership within the sector. Lang received a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Florida.

James Young, senior managing director, was born and raised in Austin, TX and has been in the multifamily investment sales business since 2010. Mr. Young specializes in value-add non-institutional assets. He responsibilities include originating and managing investment sales transactions including new business development, pricing strategies, marketing, as well as negotiating and closing transactions. Since 2010, James has been involved in over 200 transactions, representing over a $1B in multifamily real estate in Central Texas. He was recently honored with Newmark's 2016 Rising Stars Top 5 Performer award.

James graduated with Honors from Baylor University in Waco, Texas. He also attended the University of Maastricht in Maastricht, The Netherlands, where he studied business finance and international business.

 

Matthew Day - Senior Managing Director

Matthew Day joined ARA Newmark in 2018 and currently serves as a senior managing director in the company’s Austin office. Bringing over 16 years of commercial real estate experience, Mr. Day is responsible for originating and managing multifamily investment sales in Austin and San Antonio.

Prior to joining ARA Newmark, Mr. Day held leadership roles at Fogelman, Steadfast, and Wentwood Capital. He led Fogelman and Steadfast’s national investment acquisitions platform, acquiring over $2.4 billion in multifamily assets across the Midwest, Southwest and Southeast. Mr. Day purchased 31 properties, 10,100 units, with an aggregate value of $1.1 billion in Texas since 2012. While at Wentwood, he was responsible for dispositions, debt restructures, tax return and audit review, and GP/LP resolutions of LIHTC and conventional properties primarily located on the West Coast.

Mr. Day earned his MBA at New York Institute of Technology and his bachelor’s at Texas State University. He is a proud supporter of Wonders & Worries.

Matt Michelson, managing director,  joined the company in 2007 and has been directly involved in the sale of more than $1.5 billion of multi-family transactions. Prior to joining ARA, A Newmark Company, Matt worked in investment sales with a large national brokerage firm. Matt attended Baylor University and graduated with a BA in Political Science.

Andrew Childers is a managing director for ARA, A Newmark Company where he is responsible for all land brokerage activities in the Austin and San Antonio regions. Since 2007, Mr. Childers has been involved in over $300 million in land sales for a variety of product types including multifamily, office, industrial, retail, single family, seniors and affordable housing, public and non-profits. He constantly strives to add value through his advanced knowledge of the central Texas land development process by providing his clients with valuation, zoning and entitlement expertise.

Prior to joining ARA Newmark, Mr. Childers was with a major brokerage company where he focused on central Texas land brokerage representing both buyers and sellers.

Mr. Childers graduated from Baylor University with a BBA in Real Estate & Entrepreneurship degree in both real estate and entrepreneurship. He is also actively involved with multiple non-profits in Austin including For the City Network and the Austin Stone Community Church.

Jay Dwyer, Associate, joined ARA, A Newmark Company in 2017. Michelle Davidson, marketing manager, joined ARA, A Newmark Company in 2013 bringing ten years of commercial real estate, marketing, and graphic design experience to the team. In her current role, Ms. Davidson leads the marketing team and directs all marketing, advertising, public relations and market research efforts for the ARA Newmark Central Texas office and the national Student Housing and Manufactured Housing groups. She is responsible for the day-to-day production of proposals, offering memorandums, marketing collateral, flyers, marketing videos, and research reports.

Ms. Davidson joined ARA Newmark after serving as marketing manager for Barshop & Oles Company, a privately-owned full service commercial real estate development and management company. While there, she was responsible for the day-to-day production of property marketing collateral and the development and execution of advertising and marketing campaigns while simultaneously assisting the leasing and property management teams with transactions for the retail portfolio. Prior to joining Barshop & Oles, Ms. Davidson served as the marketing coordinator for Grubb & Ellis Company where she was responsible for the firm’s daily marketing functions. Working with the Austin team, she ensured compliance with corporate national branding standards and oversaw the production and design of all marketing and promotional collateral for new business, office, industrial, and retail leasing.

Ms. Davidson graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with honors and a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. She is a volunteer with Austin Pets Alive!, a Texas Exes Life Member, and a licensed notary public for the State of Texas.

Kelsey Carroll, marketing coordinator, joined Newmark Knight Frank in 2016, bringing seven years of marketing and graphic design experience to the team. In her role, she is responsible for helping compile and produce in-house offering documents, video presentations, advertising design and aiding in the press release process for office transactions. She works closely with the Central Texas multihousing team, the national Student Housing and Manufactured Housing groups. 

Prior to joining Newmark Knight Frank, Ms. Carroll worked her way up from marketing assistant to communication and design lead at HTS, a commercial HVAC manufacturer’s representative. There, she helped grow the marketing department from a two-person operation in Texas to a four-person team serving their global offices. Ms. Carroll was responsible for all print and web design materials, email marketing, social media marketing, maintaining the company website, blogging technical content, writing press releases, tradeshow displays and signage and was heading up the redesign of the firm’s global website. Working with 60+ sales teams, she maintained brand standards across the company and its sister corporations, helped plan and execute company-wide events and served as the liaison for coordinating printing and shipping of marketing materials. Ms. Carroll also previously worked as a marketing assistant for the School of Information Science and Learning Technology at the University of Missouri for three years where she developed marketing materials, assisted with web design and learned the basics of operating a marketing department.

Ms. Carroll is a Chicago native and graduated from the University of Missouri in 2012 with Magna Cum Laude honors and a Bachelor of Journalism degree.

Minh Nguyen, marketing coordinator, joined ARA, A Newmark Company in 2017, bringing six years of marketing, graphic design, and photography experience to the team. In his current role, Mr. Nguyen’s daily duties include creating proposals, offering memorandums, flyers, video production, and market research. He works closely with the ARA Newmark Central Texas multihousing team, the national Student Housing and Manufactured Housing groups.

Prior to joining ARA Newmark, Mr. Nguyen worked with an Austin real estate company that specializes in property sales and management in cities within Central Texas. As marketing design lead at the company, Mr. Nguyen’s daily responsibilities included producing all print and web materials, email marketing, direct mail campaigns, WordPress management, signage, billboard design, and ad creation. Mr. Nguyen was also involved in real estate photography and the post-editing process for all aspects of the business. Before entering the real estate field, Mr. Nguyen gained experience during his tenure at Clockwork Studios, a design agency located in San Antonio, Texas.

Mr. Nguyen is from Austin and graduated from Texas State University with Cum Laude honors and a Bachelors of Arts in Communication Design.

Nathan Wilder - Senior Financial Analyst

Nathan Wilder is a senior financial analyst for ARA, A Newmark Company where he is responsible for the underwriting, financial analysis, market research, and due diligence of multifamily assets. Since joining the company in 2014, Mr. Wilder has underwritten and analyzed over $9 billion in investment grade multifamily assets. Prior to joining ARA Newmark, Mr. Wilder worked as a processor for a private consulting firm specializing in forensic financial risk analysis. He is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a double major in Mathematics and Economics.

Brandon Buell, director for ARA, A Newmark Company’s Student Housing Group, is responsible for assisting clients in the disposition of institutional and non-institutional assets, handling all aspects of the marketing process including pricing strategies, valuation/modeling, negotiation and closing. He has been involved in over $2 billion of purpose-built multifamily transactions since joining ARA Newmark in 2015.

Prior to joining ARA Newmark, Mr. Buell was an associate partner at ApexOne Investment Partners, a private equity group in Houston, TX where his primary responsibilities included acquisitions, dispositions and asset management for both student housing and conventional multifamily assets within a 33-state region. While at ApexOne, Mr. Buell sourced 100 percent of the student housing properties for the fund and asset managed 75 percent of the student housing portfolio. Other responsibilities included overseeing due diligence and renovations, and reporting to joint venture partners. Mr. Buell worked closely with an array of large student housing joint venture partners including Crow Holdings, Balfour Beatty, Behringer Harvard and Rockstreet Partners. His experience in acquiring approximately $400 million of student housing and conventional apartment properties throughout the country provides vital knowledge to clients in valuing assets and developing disposition strategies.

Mr. Buell graduated from the Rawls Business School at Texas Tech University. A native Houstonian, he has been involved with his church in many capacities including Elder, Chairman of the School Committee and high school youth advisor. He has also served as a director on a Houston area Municipal Utility District board for more than 15 years.

Ben Harkrider is a financial analyst for ARA, A Newmark Company’s Student Housing group where he is responsible for underwriting, financial analysis and comprehensive market research of student housing assets nationwide. Prior to joining ARA Newmark, Mr. Harkrider worked internships at prominent student housing companies, including Coastal Ridge Real Estate Partners and Peak Property Group where his primary responsibilities included discounted cash flow modeling, property management, market research of economic drivers and financial analysis.

Mr. Harkrider earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from the University of Texas and a Business Foundations Certificate from the McCombs School of Business.

Jack Brett - Transaction Manager

Jack Brett is the transaction manager for ARA, A Newmark Company’s Student Housing group where his primary responsibilities include facilitating client relationships, business development, pricing and marketing strategy, and actively engaging with clients throughout the entirety of the disposition process. Since joining ARA Newmark, Mr. Brett has participated in over 100 closings, $3.5 billion in financial modeling, and over 700 valuations. He most recently worked with ARA Newmark’s Affordable Housing group, servicing a wide array of clients that included private and institutional developers, syndicators and direct Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) investors on disposition strategies. Mr. Brett is an industry veteran with substantial experience in all facets of the sale, valuation, and development process.

Prior to joining ARA Newmark, Mr. Brett worked with a Houston-based consulting firm where he performed financial reporting, analysis, modeling, and budgeting.

Mr. Brett is from Manchester, England and regularly visits the UK to source emerging capital from overseas and leverage existing relationships within the sector. Mr. Brett graduated magna cum laude from the University of St. Thomas in Houston, with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in finance, economics and marketing. He was awarded the outstanding graduate award in marketing and is a member of the Delta Mu Delta and Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Societies.

Jeremy Borst is the senior financial analyst for ARA, A Newmark Company’s Student Housing group where he is responsible for the financial analysis of all properties and portfolios including the research of economic drivers, underwriting, and performance benchmarking in support of the company’s investment sales services. His vast experience within the student housing sector lends critical insight into the most pertinent details of each specific assignment and he is involved in all facets of the sale process.

Prior to joining ARA Newmark, Mr. Borst was an analyst for nation's largest developer, owner, and manager of student housing communities, American Campus Communities. There he was responsible for the financial planning and reporting of the company’s portfolio of 75,000+ wholly-owned beds. Mr. Borst has experience in the asset managing, budgeting, investment underwriting, and forecast planning of over $5 billion of student housing assets across the nation.

Mr. Borst graduated from the State University of New York at Fredonia with a Bachelor’s of Science in Accounting.
